indoor/outdoor/all around - here's what's up with cycling in philly

Cycling and bike riding enthusiasts can be found wide and far across the Philadelphia area. Biking is already a popular hobby among Philly residents, and only growing in popularity. Even post-COVID, more people continue to turn to cycling as a way to exercise on their own, enjoy the outdoors and equip themselves with more affordable modes of transportation.

Another great thing about biking is the social and competitive involvement the hobby provides. If you’re looking to connect with cycling groups or training clubs in your area, here are some accessible rides and events.

Philadelphia Cycling Clubs and Teams

If competitive clubs and cycling teams are your preference, Philadelphia is full of them. Here are some of the most popular options.

Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP): This volunteer-operated non-profit biking organization throughout greater Philadelphia organizes free group cycling rides all year round. They also present other social and biking events for locals.

Philadelphia Altra Motion: Altra Motion is a registered competitive cycling club in the Wayne area that gives racing opportunities and cyclist training to its members.

Anchor House Foundation: Another registered USA cycling club, Anchor House Foundation connects aspiring cyclists to new routes and conditioning schedules.

Philadelphia Major Taylor Cycling Club: MTCC has been around since 2015. This cycling club was inspired by the first black cycling world champion, Major Taylor (Marshall Walter). They encourage community, training and healthy lifestyles among local cyclists.

Central Bucks Bicycle Club: For road biking and off-road cycling, the Central Bucks Bicycle Club hosts frequent events all year long.

Philadelphia Triathlon Club: If you’re training for a triathlon and want to find people to practice your cycling time with, the Philadelphia Triathlon Club is the best community to connect with.

Philly-Based Cycling and Biking Organizations

Be a good sport and contribute to local cycling organizations in the Philadelphia area with these non-profits and good causes.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia: The Bicycle Coalition provides Philly with safe and fun cycling opportunities for everyone. They host member-exclusive biking routes, bike shop discounts and free resources for those looking to take biking more seriously. They also advocate for safer street infrastructure for cyclists to ride smoothly.

Interscholastic Pennsylvania Cycling League: Inspiring kids and teens to get out and ride, this organization offers trail rides, cycling camps, biking competitions and more to youth in the Philly area.
