philly sports for every season

no time of year is off-limits: get some fresh inspo for year-round playing

True sports fanatics don’t have an off season. They practice, think about or cheer for their favorite sports year-round. However, that doesn’t mean that every sport can be played at the same level during every month. Certain sports, especially weather-dependent ones, have an ideal season.

Luckily, Philadelphia sports enthusiasts never have to suffer from a lack of options. As one of the best sports cities in the nation, Philly has a wealth of professional, collegiate and recreational leagues for every season. No matter what time of year it is, you can find a sport to watch or play in Philadelphia.

If your favorite sport isn’t in season, take the opportunity to branch out and explore other sports interests! With eseo as your guide, finding new sports to love isn’t difficult. Keep reading to learn about the best seasonal sports events for you.

Seasonal sports give us a chance to try new games and expand our skills, but getting started can be hard. Let eseo show you the best sports resources for every season.

Philadelphia Winter Sports

Winter in Philadelphia is no joke. Freezing temperatures, snow and ice storms make most outdoor sports unplayable. However, not every sport is deterred by wintery weather; in fact, some sports depend on it.

If you’re looking for professional sports to watch during winter, you’re in luck! You can catch the Philadelphia Flyers on the ice or follow the Philadelphia Eagles’ football season. More of a college sports fan? Home to nine NCAA schools, Philly has plenty of collegiate sports teams to follow during the long winter months.

If you’d rather play than cheer, you may want to explore traditional winter sports. Gear up and join an amaeteur hockey league at Rizzo Rink, or try your hand at curling with the Philadelphia Curling Club. For skiing, snowboarding and more, head up to Bear Creek Mountain Resort and enjoy a weekend on the slopes.

Philadelphia Spring Sports

Spring is the time everyone comes out of hiding, including sports fans who’ve been waiting out the long winter months. For many sports players and fans, spring is the ideal time to relax outside, explore nature or catch a ball game.

For fans of Major League Baseball, nothing says spring quite like catching the Philadelphia Phillies at the Citizens Bank Stadium. Interested in something a little different? Check out Philadelphia’s professional ultimate frisbee team, Philadelphia Phoenix

If you can’t bear to sit on the sidelines, jump into one of the many ameteur sports leagues that operate during springtime. Here are some incredible options for spring play:

  • Philadelphia Area Disc Alliance: a nonprofit organization that runs multiple ultimate frisbee leagues in Greater Philadelphia.
  • Philadelphia Adult League Softball (PALS): a collection of mixed-gender softball leagues in West Philadelphia that organize seasonal play, tournaments and opportunities to give back to the community.
  • Philadelphia Cricket Club: get acquainted with America’s fastest growing sport, pickleball! The Cricket Club is open to pickleball players of all skill levels and provides access to other outdoor sports, including golf and squash leagues.

Looking for a place to toss a ball or set up a yard game? Check out Philadelphia’s sprawling West Fairmount Park or gorgeous FDR Park in South Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Summer Sports

Summer sports have a distinct energy, a heat behind them. If you’re ready to flex your competitive nature, you’ve got a ton of chances to cheer on your favorite Philly teams or enter your own recreational games.

School’s out for summer, so you probably won’t be catching any collegiate games. The upside is that Philly’s professional teams are in full swing! That’s right, summer is soccer season, and Philly’s professional team Philadelphia Union never fails to deliver fast-paced, exhilarating matches. Field sports fans who want a different kind of rush should check out Philly’s own professional lacrosse team, Philadelphia Wings

Ready to make summer a season to remember? Get involved with a local amateur league or take advantage of solo recreational activities! Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Stonewall Sports: an organization that offers sand volleyball, billiards, yoga and running opportunities for amateur athletes during the summer.
  • Casa Soccer League: a high-quality, player-run soccer organization that facilitates league and tournament play for soccer players of every skill level. This affordable league is the largest amateur soccer organization in the region.
  • DC Bocce League: an inclusive bocce ball league that prioritizes positive social interactions and fun. Sign up solo or join a team to start playing bocce all over Philadelphia!

Want to stay active but don’t necessarily want to join a league? Philadelphia Parks & Recreation manages hundreds of recreational, environmental and cultural centers across Greater Philadelphia. Take a swim, hike on a nature trail or take your kids to one of the well-maintained public playgrounds near you.

Philadelphia Fall Sports

By the time fall rolls around, even hardcore summer people are ready for a break from the heat. When you need to cool off but don’t want to slow down, Philly meets you with another round of exceptional seasonal sports.

The advent of fall means one thing to basketball fans: the Philadelphia 76ers are back! The beloved Sixers hit the courts in October, and although their season extends into spring, we’re calling it a fall sport. And for college basketball fans, fall also means the return of the Philadelphia Big Five — a group of NCAA Division I basketball schools with fiercely competitive men and women’s basketball teams.

With the trees changing and the weather cooling down, fall is the perfect season to enjoy Philadelphia’s many parks, hiking trails and walking paths. Head over to Wissahickon Valley Park or the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge to reconnect with nature before the year comes to an end. Want the chance to play one more outdoor sport before winter? Join the Philly Kickball League or the Greater Philadelphia Flag Football League
